Some songs begin with an idea. Others begin with a melody. Shell Shock began with a question.
What happens when conflict stops feeling like isolated moments and starts becoming an atmosphere?
The song explores what it feels like to live through prolonged periods of high tension, repeated verbal conflict, and emotional unpredictability. Over time, individual incidents begin to blur together. The experience becomes less about one difficult exchange and more about living in anticipation of the next one. Eventually, the mind and body can begin preparing for impact before anything has even happened.
Rather than describing that experience literally, I searched for a metaphor that captured what it felt like internally. The answer was warfare.
The battlefield in Shell Shock is not a physical place. It is the human nervous system.
Mortar rounds become cutting words. Shrapnel represents the emotional fragments left behind after conflict. "Friendly fire" reflects the reality that some of our deepest wounds come from places we once associated with safety. Bunkers symbolize the emotional defenses we build to survive. Higher walls promise protection, yet they can also create isolation. Every military image serves as a psychological metaphor rather than a historical one.
At the center of the song is a recurring question:
> "Is it an expression... or just an attack?"
That question isn't meant to accuse or answer. It reflects the uncertainty that can develop when communication is consistently experienced as hostile, unpredictable, or emotionally overwhelming. The song deliberately leaves the question unresolved because perception, intent, and impact are often far more complicated than they first appear.
As the writing evolved, I realized the song wasn't really about the attacks themselves. It was about what repeated exposure to conflict does to the person experiencing it. That's why the title eventually changed from Blitzkrieg to Shell Shock. The focus shifted away from the assault and toward its lasting effect.
Several images describe trauma through physiology rather than violence. "Jaw locked tight," "Pulse searching for survivors," and "Raw nerves shredded" all point toward the body's instinctive survival responses. One of the lines that became central to the song,
> "Pulse searching for survivors..."
imagines looking inward after each emotional barrage to see what parts of yourself remain intact. That image became one of the emotional anchors of the piece.
Musically, I wanted the production to avoid spectacle. There are no cinematic orchestras or explosive sound effects. Instead, the song lives inside a restrained East Coast boom bap groove built around warm Rhodes, upright bass, sparse piano, and a soulful baritone vocal. The production intentionally leaves space. Hypervigilance is often experienced less as constant chaos than as waiting. Waiting for the next impact. Waiting for the next whisper of "Incoming..."
The whispered warnings, the subtle background responses of "Attack," and the commanding cry of "Fire!" represent different voices within the same experience. The whispers embody anticipation. The background vocals become intrusive thoughts that grow louder over time. The commands represent the moment conflict erupts. Together, they create a conversation between external events and the body's internal response.
The closing word,
> "Yield..."
is intentionally understated. Here, yielding is not surrender. It is the conscious decision to choose survival over escalation, to preserve one's humanity rather than becoming consumed by conflict. Sometimes the strongest response is not to keep fighting, but to remain grounded enough to step out of the cycle.
Within the Werekh album, Shell Shock represents another chapter in a broader journey of healing. If The Compass searches for direction and The Salve longs for restoration, Shell Shock gives voice to the invisible cost of living in prolonged tension. It acknowledges that some of the deepest wounds leave no visible scars, only a nervous system that has learned to brace for impacts that may or may not come.
In the end, Shell Shock is not a song about war.
It is a song about what happens when the battlefield follows you home and takes up residence in your mind.

Fictional assertions and images skewed

Confused
At loss
Beguiled
What once was truth
Ashamed
And maimed
Unclaimed
This heart dismayed
My soul elongates
As I circle the black hole
This drain
Pleading for time
Pleading for change
Take me
My heart
Before it's beat
Is rearranged
Give me that salve
Disinfect the gangrenous wounds
Hold tight you lose
Give me the salve
Burn the nerve to stop the pain
Give me the salve
Clean the mind remove the words absurd
Hold tight you lose
Give me the salve
Your voice I listen heals
Illuminates the wounds

As I move throughout the day
The weight of fifty years of strain
On my anterior cingulate
Overtaxed
Weary
Worn down by
Regret and indecision
Present and past
Overwhelmed by the tower of should
One hundred meters high
Reaching toward the cirrus
Brick by Brick
At the doorstep of hyperventilation
I breathe
Try
Inhale to stop the stars
Overtaken by adrenaline
The field narrows
Light dissipates
As all I see before me
Is dark
I feel it all around me
Cause it pulls me down
Down Down Down
Every step
Every movement
Breaks through as it pulls me down
No sound
Always there
Cause its pull surrounds
Down
Amidst these failures
Mistakes and depravity
It feels inescapable
This
Gravity
As I grip the needle tightly
And spin backwards
Time remains the same
Flashback images
Projected behind the retina
The flushed rush of guilt
Blame
Shame
Assume the best
Or assume the worst
The junction reached
A resonant voice
I hear inside
Take another step forward
Inch up
Move
Knowing my only option
This moment
This now
This second in time
I feel it all around me
Cause it pulls me down
Down Down Down
Every step
Every movement
Breaks through
As it pulls me down
No sound
Always there
Cause its pull surrounds
Down
Amidst these failures
Mistakes
And depravity
It feels inescapable

Gravity
Decades of inadequacy flood the veins
Every failure
Still circulating
Returning with each heartbeat
Back to the origin again
Standing upon this event horizon
Enveloped by stars
Feet planted firm
On this hurling stone
Engraved with scars
This black hole pulls me inward
Down
Where nothing escapes
Not light
Not thought
Not hope
Not even
Sound
It's only through calm acceptance
Where I feel a new trajectory
Achieving escape velocity
My one chance
At vindication
And grace
I feel it all around me
Cause it pulls me down
Down Down Down
Every step
Every movement
Breaks through
As it pulls me down
No sound
Always there
Cause its pull surrounds

Amidst these failures

Cause it's always there
To pull me down
Down Down Down
It has no preference or care
It pulls me down
Down

To prepare
Down Down Down
Yet it pulls me down
My life
My soul
My mind
My clarity

With unquenched appetite
Gravity
This force lies
Beneath the world that's seen
Affecting all throughout history
Void of age

Inescapable
Acceptance
Is the path we must choose
To break through

Brought me here
One more step
Carries me forward
It is a decision

It waits to see
Because I know it's always there
Waiting
To pull me Down
To take me over
Be the victor
Wear the crown
Yes lord
I know it's always there
Waiting
To pull me down
Down Down Down
Every step

It waits to see
I know it's always there
Waiting
To pull me down
To challenge
Demand my surrender
Demand my

Gravity was written in a Home Depot parking lot after a stream of consciousness unexpectedly became one of the defining moments of the WEREKH album. What began as a snapshot of a difficult season evolved into a meditation on invisible forces that shape every human life. While the title immediately evokes the physical force that binds the universe together, the song uses gravity as a metaphor for anxiety, guilt, regret, depression, self-doubt, and every unseen burden that quietly pulls against forward motion. Rather than describing specific events, the lyrics focus on the internal experience of carrying weight that never completely disappears.
Scientific language appears throughout the song, not as decoration, but as another vocabulary for describing emotional reality. References to the anterior cingulate cortex, event horizons, black holes, escape velocity, and light are woven together with moments of panic, hyperventilation, and memory. These concepts mirror one another. A panic attack narrows perception just as gravity bends light. A traumatic memory can feel as inescapable as a black hole. Yet the song ultimately turns toward one of physics' most hopeful ideas: escape velocity. Gravity is never defeated. It never ceases to exist. Instead, enough momentum is gained that its pull no longer determines the direction of travel. That realization becomes the emotional turning point of the song.
The recurring chorus intentionally mirrors gravity itself. Its repetitive descent of "Down... Down... Down..." creates the sensation of an ever-present force that never rests. The repetition is meant to feel unavoidable, much like intrusive thoughts or the persistent weight of accumulated life experience. Rather than fighting that reality, the final verses introduce acceptance as an act of courage. The song argues that healing is not found in denying gravity's existence, but in acknowledging it while continuing to move forward anyway.
The closing moments complete a quiet narrative that begins in the opening verse. Early in the song, panic narrows vision until the stars disappear from view. By the final chorus, after choosing movement over surrender, the narrator lifts his eyes and sees the stars once again. Gravity remains. The universe has not changed. What has changed is perspective. Hope returns not because suffering has ended, but because clarity has. That final image captures the central message of Gravity: we cannot always choose the forces acting upon us, but we can choose whether those forces define the direction of our lives.
Within the broader WEREKH album, Gravity represents the stage of healing where the goal is no longer to eliminate pain, but to understand it, live alongside it, and continue taking one more step. The song is less about overcoming life's weight than about discovering that resilience is built one decision, one breath, and one step at a time.

Patience was born in the most ordinary way imaginable. Standing in the kitchen making spaghetti and meatballs, a single word surfaced: patience. That one word became the spark for a song exploring one of the most universal human struggles, our relationship with time. Rather than treating time as a simple measure of hours and minutes, the song personifies it as an immense force that shapes every life, regardless of our desire to control it.
The verses trace the psychology of anticipation. The narrator watches clocks, calculates outcomes, searches for certainty, and desperately tries to stay one step ahead of an unknowable future. Scientific references such as pico-seconds and the metaphor of individual grains of sand reflect an analytical mind attempting to quantify uncertainty. The recurring image of driving toward an invisible destination with no off-ramp captures the feeling of moving through life without knowing when, or if, the long-awaited moment of resolution will arrive.
At the center of the song is the refrain, "Time... is the FIRE... in which we burn..." Inspired by a philosophical phrase that had lingered in memory for decades, it became the defining metaphor for the piece. Fire is both destructive and transformative. It consumes, refines, tempers, and ultimately changes everything it touches. Time does the same. Every joy, every wound, every relationship, every loss, and every act of healing passes through its flames.
Musically, Patience marks a turning point within the WEREKH album. Where earlier songs often dwell in grief, confusion, or survival, this track intentionally embraces a warmer neo-soul palette. The relaxed groove stands in contrast to lyrics filled with urgency, creating a quiet tension between an anxious mind and music that refuses to rush. As the song progresses, layered harmonies gradually become more present, symbolizing the growing realization that peace is found not by forcing answers, but by learning to breathe within uncertainty.
The emotional climax arrives not with a dramatic revelation, but with a single word: "Enough." It is neither surrender nor defeat. It is a conscious decision to stop negotiating with fear, stop racing the clock, and stop demanding immediate clarity. From that stillness comes the quiet affirmation, "It's my time... To... Shine..." The victory is not over time itself, but over the compulsion to outrun it.
The closing lines complete the transformation. Early in the song, time appears as an overwhelming force stretching toward infinity. By the outro, the narrator recognizes that while time cannot be controlled, it also cannot confiscate identity, erase purpose, or define worth. It simply bears witness. In the end, Patience is less a song about waiting than about learning to exist peacefully within the continuum of time itself. It suggests that healing is rarely a single destination. More often, it is the quiet choice to keep breathing, let go, and trust that the next step will reveal itself when its time arrives.

Two Rights, Two Wrongs was born from one of the most difficult questions I've ever wrestled with:
How can two people sincerely believe they are right, yet both leave the conversation wounded?
The song doesn't attempt to assign blame or determine who ultimately holds the truth. Instead, it explores something far more unsettling: that our experiences are filtered through our own perceptions, memories, emotions, and histories. Even when two people witness the same event, they may walk away carrying completely different realities.
Throughout the song, the imagery of oceans, tides, driftwood, lighthouses, compasses, vectors, and uncharted coordinates represents the search for certainty. The narrator repeatedly reaches for something stable to navigate by, only to discover that even a compass depends upon the perspective of the person holding it.
This song intentionally follows The Compass within the emotional landscape of Werekh. The Compass asks where to find direction. Two Rights, Two Wrongs asks whether our own internal compass can always be trusted, and what happens when another person's compass points somewhere entirely different.
The repeated refrain, "Once... twice... thrice... am I right?" slowly transforms throughout the song. It begins as a simple question but gradually becomes an existential plea. The narrator is no longer asking whether they won an argument. They're asking whether they can still trust their own perception of reality.
The references to the Mingun Bell, the Ouroboros, and the lighthouse reinforce themes of repetition, renewal, and the hope of eventually finding solid ground after being lost at sea. The recurring tides symbolize conflict that continually returns despite every attempt to move beyond it, while the image of swimming upstream reflects the exhausting effort to preserve one's identity in the face of repeated misunderstanding.
Perhaps the most important lyric arrives near the end:
"The inverted images in my retinas are impartial... They captured real-time experience... They capture my... reality."
This isn't a declaration of objective truth. It is an acknowledgment that our senses faithfully record our own lived experience, even if another person's experience is equally real to them. The song intentionally leaves the listener sitting inside that tension without providing an easy resolution.
The closing spoken words, "Amidst this life we live... there's no wrong... it just... is..." are not meant to suggest that harmful actions don't exist. Rather, they express a moment of humility. Sometimes conflict arises not because one person is evil and the other virtuous, but because two human beings genuinely struggle to bridge the distance between their separate realities.
Musically, Two Rights, Two Wrongs embraces the warm, introspective atmosphere of early 1990s East Coast conscious hip-hop while allowing spoken-word poetry and understated soul phrasing to carry the emotion. Rather than presenting anger or accusation, the performance remains intimate and vulnerable, inviting the listener into an internal dialogue rather than a confrontation.
At its heart, Two Rights, Two Wrongs is about the painful space between perception and understanding. It asks whether healing begins not by proving someone wrong, but by recognizing that another person's reality may be as sincerely lived as our own.

Yet with every calculation
The sum was wrong
So wrong
I’m not sure when it happened
In my mind I
Heard this click
Click
A new thought
New thought
New equation
Not theory
But way to live
Live
Cause I had to learn that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
My reflection
Always
Points back to me
Back to me
Because
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Learn to replace the certain
With irrationality
Now that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
The only way to see
The only way for a
We
We-ee-ee
I tried again
Was stubborn
Had to make sense
My job to understand
Determined
To climb that fence
While reaching over
I paused
Had to look down
Realized how high
I built the walls
Up
Built them walls
I was trapped
Trapped
Can’t get down
Can’t get down
Cause I had to learn that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
My reflection
Always
Points back to me
Because
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Learn to replace the certain
With irrationality
Now that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Two people form a third thing
A third thing
But I thought it was
My way or the highway
My way
Inside I felt strong
So strong
Until the math didn’t add up
Told me
Something wrong
Something wrong
I tried
You tried
I tried
You tried
To listen
To learn how to see
How to see
Till I looked into the mirror
And saw
One
One
Three
Three-ee-ee
The solution
Stared
Back
At
Me
Me
That’s why
Cause I had to learn that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
This reflection
This theorem
Points back to me
Back to me
Had to learn that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Still trying to replace the certain
Still trying
With irrationality
Sometimes this quotient
Makes no sense to me
No sense to me
Refuting supposed experts
Is
New
Territory
New territory
I still don’t feel I’m perfect
Not close
My truth
Incomplete
Incomplete
That’s when it happened
In my mind I
Heard this click
Click
Scared of heights
So high
And falling
Chose to live
Live
That’s why I’m try’na learn that
Still learning
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
My reflection
Always
Points back to me
Back to me
Because

Learn to replace the certain
With irrationality
Now that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
The only way to see
The only way for a
We
We-ee-ee
So with it I’m gonna go
Gonna go
Progress inside
Inside
I hope it shows
Let it show
Make small adjustments
Little by little
Till it flows
Let it flow
They may not see
Or ever know
The seed is planted
Planted
Gonna give it some water
Chance to grow
Grow-oh-oh
Now that
One
Plus
One
Is
Three
Three-ee-ee
The only way to see
The only way for a
We
We-ee-ee
Sincerity
Brings clarity
And when you fail
Fail up
I still don't have this thing figured out
Not even close
But I can tell you
Sometimes the math don’t add up

“1 + 1 = 3” began with a contradiction.
For someone who has spent a lifetime relying on logic, structure, analysis, and predictable outcomes, relationships can feel like impossible mathematics. Two people enter the same situation with their own histories, perceptions, fears, intentions, and emotional realities, yet the result rarely behaves like a simple equation.
The song explores the moment that contradiction stops looking like an error and begins to reveal a deeper truth.
One person plus another person does not create only two separate individuals. It also creates a third thing: the relationship itself. That shared space develops its own patterns, pressures, memories, wounds, and possibilities. It becomes an emergent system that cannot always be understood by examining either person alone.
The verses follow the resistance to that idea. The narrator approaches human connection as a problem to solve, trusting proven facts, expert advice, and repeated calculations. But every answer continues to produce the wrong sum. The more certainty he builds around himself, the more those protections become walls.
The recurring equation becomes both a kernel panic and a revelation:
One.
Plus one.
Is three.
The reflection at the center of the song is not about accepting blame for everything. It is about recognizing the only variable a person can directly examine and change: themselves. The mirror does not provide a complete solution, but it creates an opening for humility, sincerity, and a different way of seeing.
Musically, the slow rolling pulse gives the song a circular feeling, as though the narrator is moving repeatedly around the same equation before finally seeing it from another angle. The intimate verses remain analytical and restrained, while the stacked harmonies gradually expand around “three” and “we,” allowing the relationship itself to become audible as another presence in the room.
The bridge strips the arrangement back as certainty begins to collapse. Separate background voices answer the lead, and the isolated sequence of “one, one, three” transforms an impossible calculation into an emotional realization.
Like much of WEREKH, the song does not claim that healing is complete. The narrator is still learning, still adjusting, and still confronting moments when the math refuses to add up.
The final answer is not perfection.
It is willingness.
Small adjustments.
Water for the seed.
A chance to grow.

sometimes
Sometimes
I hear your words
Make attempts to change
To start fresh each day
Yet I hear echoes of shoulds
You say I don't pay attention
So I try to listen
And stay on course
Taking steps to be intentional
So I
Follow the line
And neva veer off course
Cause
Across the room
I feel your heartbeat
I hear your needs
I hear your heart
Bandage up the hurts you bleed
Try'in to patch the wound
Of this love that's lost
Sometimes
I can't seem to see
Is it you
Or is it me
Sometimes
I don't seem to get you
Feel I'm blind
Not hearing
What you need
Sometimes
I'm lost with out you
In this dark
I just can't see
Sometimes
I just can't function
Without a solution
To transform
Two into three
Sometimes
Sometimes
Sometimes
Each day
I keep fallin down
Face-first off
This big old horse
Tomorrow
Gonna try it
One-more-'gain
Till I can grab those reins
Pull up
And
Stay
On
Course
Oh no
Oh no
Here it comes again
A hail-storm of doubt
Regret
Gonna run
Gonna hide
Grab shelter
That peaceful memory
Of where we once laid
Cause
Across the room

I hear your needs

“Sometimes” began in the middle of an ordinary workday.
While watching a technical video about cloud storage, the phrase “Sometimes, I don’t seem to get you” surfaced with its own rhythm, melody, and emotional weight. Within minutes, it became a stream-of-consciousness reflection on misunderstanding, effort, repetition, and the exhausting search for connection.
The song lives inside the space between intention and impact.
Its narrator is trying to listen, trying to change, trying to remain intentional, yet still finds himself caught inside the same cycle. Every new day brings another attempt to start over, followed by the fear that the message has once again been missed. The repeated word “sometimes” becomes both confession and explanation. It acknowledges that failure is real, but not constant, permanent, or intentional.
At the center of the song is the desire to “transform two into three.” The line describes the hope that two people can create something greater than either person alone: a shared understanding, a living connection, a third space where both can exist without disappearing.
Musically, “Sometimes” contrasts emotional uncertainty with an upbeat neo-soul groove. The rhythm keeps moving even when the narrator feels lost. Warm instrumentation and a head-nodding pocket carry lyrics filled with doubt, hurt, and persistence. That tension gives the song its emotional force. It is wounded, but not defeated.
The bridge marks the internal turning point.
“I try to do.”
“I try to prove.”
“Not stuck, I move.”
The call-and-response vocals transform private self-doubt into a communal declaration. Failure is acknowledged. Pride is released. Movement continues even when there is no wind in the sails.
By the outro, the search for a solution gives way to something more fundamental.
“I’m here.”
The final repetition is not a claim of perfection or certainty. It is a statement of presence. After every misunderstanding, every fall, and every attempt to regain the reins, the narrator remains emotionally present and willing to keep trying.
“Sometimes” is about the painful distance that can exist between people who still care deeply. It is also about the fragile hope that listening, humility, and persistence might eventually create a path through the darkness.

the lighthouse
Time
Keeps on slipping
Thru my fingertips like sand
Always questioning my abilities
To remain
Holding up
These weary hands
I cradle the shadow
Yet it disappears into blue
An echo of where you once stood
Illuminating footprints without shoes
So I try to step closer
Reach out between the rays
Sunlight reflects what once was
The indentation where you once lay
Cause I just want to see
The hazel lights that split the sky
Looked at
Not just through me
Electric
Spirit alive
Time
Aged
Made us grow old
Time
Turned warmth
To cold
Mistakes
The voice that’s loud
Darkness covered
Enclothed
The shroud
But still my hands
Outstretched
Try to reach
To cup and hold
Catch the whisper of last words spoken
Gently caress the shadow
I take deep breaths
Pull in all oxygen
Deep into my chest
Hoping to breathe in words left unspoken
Exhaling toxicity
Bitterness
And unrest
Time feels frozen
As if I view from way up high
Overwatching this interaction
From a throne on dimension five
So I try to step closer
Reach out between the rays
Sunlight reflects what once was
The indentation where you once lay
Cause I just want to see
The hazel lights that split the sky
Looked at
Not just through me

To support
To quench
Provide
A cure for dehydration
Elixir from the sky
Hands cupped I’m here to nourish
To support
To quench
Provide
To offer lamp oil
To spark
Ignite
Giving this

Some songs begin with an idea. Others begin with a melody.
The Lighthouse began with silence.
Lying awake in the darkness with the cat wandering through the room, my thoughts drifted back to the last interaction we shared. What stayed with me wasn't the conversation itself. It was the expression. The heaviness. The absence of the light I once knew so well.
As I sat with those thoughts, images began to surface.
First, cupped hands carrying water. Hands trying to offer nourishment to someone who may no longer be able to receive it.
Then came the lighthouse.
The symbolism unfolded almost on its own. A lighthouse doesn't chase ships through the storm. It doesn't plead for them to turn around. It simply remains where it stands, tending its flame so that anyone searching for direction can find their way home.
That image became the heart of the song.
Throughout the lyrics, time is portrayed as an unrelenting force. It slips through our fingers, changes us, and slowly cools the warmth that once felt effortless. Yet beneath that reality is a quieter question: what remains when time has taken almost everything else?
The answer, for me, was choice.
I can still choose to hold out my hands.
I can still choose to nourish rather than wound.
I can still choose to keep the light burning.
The bridge intentionally shifts from water to lamp oil. Water sustains life. Lamp oil sustains the beacon. Both are acts of care, but one nourishes the body while the other illuminates the path. The lighthouse only fulfills its purpose if someone continues tending its flame.
Part of that imagery was inspired by a story shared by Dr. Conte. A monk was given a lantern so others could see him while walking at night. When another traveler accidentally bumped into him, the monk angrily replied, "Don't you see my lamp?" The traveler quietly answered, "Brother... your lamp burned out several miles back."
That story has stayed with me.
It's a reminder that believing we're bringing light is not the same as actually bringing light. A flame requires attention. Compassion requires intention. We all have moments when we assume we're illuminating the path while our own lamp has quietly gone dark.
The repeated refrain, "Gonna light the way," became less of a declaration and more of a promise. Not a promise to rescue someone, and not a promise that everything will be restored, but a commitment to continue choosing kindness, guidance, and hope regardless of whether those gifts are accepted.
The song closes with spacious harmonies that slowly fade into silence. I wanted those voices to feel less like a performance and more like the slow, rhythmic sweep of a lighthouse beam across dark water. The light returns... disappears... returns again... quietly reminding anyone lost in the darkness that they are not navigating alone.
Sometimes healing isn't found by changing another person's course.
Sometimes healing begins by making sure our own light never goes out.

Unseen Hero was written as a tribute to individuals whose contributions often go unnoticed.
These may be caregivers, parents, mentors, workers, friends, or anyone whose efforts improve the lives of others without receiving recognition.
The song challenges conventional definitions of heroism.
Rather than focusing on fame or extraordinary achievement, it celebrates consistency, sacrifice, compassion, and responsibility.
Its central message is that some of the most important heroes never appear in history books.
